As the future rainbow jersey’s (my son) vocabulary currently runs to ‘Car’ or ‘Auto’ (yep already bilingual) I have yet to experience the fear all parents must go through of I want, I want, I want.
Spare a thought for Mrs Rouleur though who doesn’t have this luxury. It’s not that our son sees her as the weak link, in fact it’s not our son at all. No, the problem is her man child husband who uses these words on at least a biweekly basis. A yes brings about childish glee and excitement and said man child sitting at the front door waiting for post. A no however brings about this look;
This sometimes leads to a yes and we know where that leads but a no well that leads to a grumpy sulk until, like a giant toddler, said Peter Pan is distracted by something else that ‘I want, I want, I want’.
I am of course the man child, but what is it that I want?? Yep you guessed it, cycling gear. From must haves to might needs, summer jerseys to winter tights and let’s not even get started on the bikes……….ok let’s, Cross, MTB, Fixie, Road in steel, titanium and of course carbon fibre are all firmly on ‘The List’
‘The List’ is something that I have exploited the iPhone Notes app to create. Everyday I read cycling magazines, books and blogs on my long commute in to the land of the Boris Bike, and everyday I find myself reaching for my phone to add an item to ‘The List’
Recently I have found this to be growing quicker than ever, and my bank balance depleting faster than a certain Texan’s as I have discovered UK Cycling Bargains on Facebook (and Twitter @CycleBargains ). Some of the deals I have used on here are crazy awesome and you should definitely check it out (seriously I got a great Dare2be jersey for £6 and a Gore Xenon 2.0 jacket for £45!!)
When I have spare time I slowly go back through my list to cull any items that upon further research was not quite the ‘Must have’ purchase I thought it was, but in general it just grows and grows.That is the exciting thing about being a ‘Cyclist’ there is always a new piece of kit, a new model of bike and yes even a new novelty item (custom bike declals anyone?) that can be purchased.
So what’s top of my list? Well I am glad you asked.
At the moment I have a dream bike the Genesis Datum, and a dream piece of kit, a Castelli Gabba 2 (though I want/need to be less Roly for that purchase). I also wouldn’t mind a domestic team kit perhaps ONE Proc cycling (yes it breaks rule number 17 but I don’t care) they are a great team with an exciting future [Disclaimer – there are other domestic teams of equal standing that I am happy to break ‘The rules’ for, Madison Genesis.,Team Wiggins I am looking at you].
My point though is that this ‘I want, I want, I want’ is the beauty and fun of cycling. Most of us are lucky if we can find a few pounds to buy that must have bargain whilst others won’t blink at spending £thousands on a front wheel but there are I wants for everyone. I just need to remember some ‘I wants’ might just be more achievable than others (crosses the Trek Madone butterfly bike by Damien Hirst sadly off ‘The List’).

I have to admit, I’m the same lately. My list is still quite short though. Being a portly female, I treated myself to a mens thermal jacket and a waterproof one too from ebay (mens as the womens plus sizes are hugely expensive), both together came to under £35 and my husband told me off, saying that he could have picked me up a pack-a-mac from the car boot for a fiver. I tried to explain that a pack-a-mac just wouldn’t cut the mustard because of the lower cut back on cycling gear, sadly it fell on deaf ears. I think he more had the hump because they were on my birthday present list 😉 ….. he does still have gloves and either an all out road bike or a hybrid on the list which I’d be more than happy with hehehehe x
