Day 3 – Cobbles, Hills and Buckled Wheels

Good afternoon to all,

So here we are still in Belgium but closing in on both the Netherlands and Germany where we should end up in tomorrow.

Todays stats, 70 miles, 2.5km of Cobbles, four buckled wheels, and a cycle path that my good friend described with an unbroken five minute expletive filled rant.

My fellow Roly started the day (and ended the day yesterday) with both wheels severely buckled, so much so he was basically riding with the break on for 20km. Oh and a drunk past out on the concrete in front of him where his wonderful bedside manner came in to play (tongue firmly in cheek), he did put him in the recovery position and slapped him until he woke back up.

This morning was spent trying to align this and a quick fix was completed, he still had to leave the back break open though! And away we go.

A pit stop in Galvere for breakfast and then onwards we rolled. From Galvere which had a couple of ‘cheeky’ climbs we headed into the countryside where a right turn took us to the aforementioned cobbles, which did for my back wheel too (it must be said to a much less extreme level).

This area was teeming with cycle clubs which make some of the more snobby English clubs look positively friendly! And to add to the glares and blank looks the weather was terrible!!

A lunch stop in a lovely town square in the rain was much needed and then a second stint to our current position is where I now sit and write. A less eventful second half of the day with only two noteworthy points. The first my front wheel is now also slightly buckled, and more humourously our ride to the camp site.

At the last minute a change of campsite meant that we literally rode our heavily laden bikes through farm tracks and dirt paths, to another lovely campsite.

Another short day is frustrating though, however as we wanted to sleep we had no choice but to arrive as close to 4pm as we could. Nothing and I mean virtually Nothing is open in Belgium on a Sunday!!

For now, I hope you have all had fun days and enjoyed this rambling read.

I am just thankful that I am another day closer to my wonderful wife and my own cheeky little monster.

Now where is the bar…….
